[English version]

Note: In explaining the following words, idioms, and expressions, I omit “unnecessary explanation” and only add the core meaning and explanation. Adding extra fluff in the explanation is too bothersome and tiring. Thank you for your understanding. ^^;


1) boarding school: It is a school where the students both study and live on campus.

3) fork over: (US informal, especially money) to hand over/pay/transfer. ex) fork something over to someone = give/pay something to someone

5) orthopedic: orthopedic (medical specialty)

6) congenital: innate / inborn / natural disposition

7) empathize: to empathize / to share feelings

8) sciatic: relating to the sciatic nerve / sciatica

9) arthritic: relating to arthritis / arthritis patient

10) one-liner: a joke or witty remark in a single sentence, with a brief setup and clever twist.

ex) “Is there a single, good, deadly one-liner I could have used?” = a decisive remark / killer line

11) condescend / condescending: to patronize / to act superior / to look down on someone

12) That has caused a strain on our team and has fueled resentment.: It has increased the burden and heightened resentment.

13) That doesn't give him carte blanche to use it as an excuse.: (from French) carte blanche = full authority. Meaning: That doesn’t mean he can use it as an excuse.

14) Alrighty: a softer, friendlier version of “all right.” Informal interjection used to agree, accept, or acknowledge. Positive nuance. ex) “Well, alrighty then.” = “In that case…”

15) listen to me/her/his vent: “Will you listen to my rant/complaints?”

16) to ram a vehicle: to drive a vehicle into something / crash / force in

17) do not box in: don’t trap / don’t corner. ex) “Don’t get boxed in.”

18) I look deceptively young for my age.: I look younger than I am (misleadingly).

19) I was just a precocious teen.: I was a precocious teenager.

20) It has grown more pronounced as I age.: It has become more evident as I get older.

21) It is observed on the third Monday of January.

22) observed: to commemorate / observe / notice / follow / keep (religious commandment) / remark

23) These laws outlawed discrimination and protected the right to vote for all.

24) outlawed: banned / declared illegal / deprived of legal protection / outlaw

25) I used to have a lump in my throat.: I used to feel like something was stuck in my throat.

26) Whelks are carnivorous predators, feeding on clams and other mollusks.

whelk: sea snail / shellfish. clam: clam. mollusk: mollusk.

27) something/it is on the horizon.: something is about to happen / coming soon.

28) stop touching the thermostat. it is not that cold.: thermostat = temperature control device.

29) don't snap at me: don’t yell at me / don’t lose your temper at me.

30) get over yourself: stop being arrogant / stop showing off / calm down.

31) you stood me up last night: you didn’t show up for our date/meeting last night.

32) have/get skin in the game: to have personal (financial or emotional) investment or risk in something. no skin in the game = no personal stake.

33) It is down to you to do something.: It’s your responsibility.

▶Alrighty: all right 을 더 부드럽고 친근하게 표현한 말로, 동의하거나, 괜찮다고 하거나, 상황을 인정할 때 쓰는 비격식적인 감탄사이며, "좋아!", "알았어!"처럼 긍정적인 뉘앙스. ex) Well, alrighty then. 그렇다면야...

▶listen to me/her/his vent: 넋두리 좀 들어줄래/푸념 좀 해도 될까.

▶to ram a vehicle: 차량으로 돌진하다. 들이받다/밀어넣다/쑤셔넣다.

▶do not box in: 궁지에 몰아넣지마. ex) dont get boxed in.

▶have/get skin in the game: 어떤 일에 개인적으로 (재정적 또는 감정적으로 직접적인 이해관계가 있을 때) 투자하거나 위험을 감수하고 있다는 뜻. no skin in the game.
