Broken Windows Theory: Evil drives out good.  We now live in an era where evil drives out good.

Personal note: I’ve written countless pieces on similar topics before. What “good” needs right now is not a flimsy “shield.” What is needed is a clear weapon capable of controlling, restraining, or eliminating the extreme minority of “evil.” A naïve tool like a shield cannot even restrain or control such extreme evil—let alone eliminate it. In fact, it cannot.

The reality is that a small but extreme “evil” drives out quiet “good.” And this phenomenon is not limited to education. The extreme minority of “evil” exists everywhere in society.

The problem is that such a minority of evil eventually makes it impossible for good to prevail, pushing out and displacing the majority of quiet good.

One of the biggest reasons—though not the only one—is shallow sentimentalism and idealism. These sentimentalists and idealists demand perfect systems or devices, even though perfection cannot exist in reality. They insist on “perfectly just” methods of punishing or controlling evil.

By demanding unrealistic perfection, they convince themselves that they are noble, dignified, and intellectually superior. They believe that insisting on such ideals makes them better human beings.

But for “good” to eliminate, control, or defeat “evil,” it must inevitably adopt some of evil’s attributes. Only then can good restrain, punish, or control evil.

By refusing to allow good to wield the attributes of evil—thanks to shallow idealists and sentimentalists—we have created a reality where perpetrators sue victims, and evil punishes good. That’s why some claim that punishing or restraining criminals is “inhumane” or against “human dignity.” They regard the dignity and rights of victims as inferior to those of perpetrators. In short, they are foolish people trapped in shallow ideology.

The legal profession is perhaps the most representative of this group. Lawyers and judges often treat the values and common sense of ordinary people as inferior, mocking them as ignorant of the law. They invoke “rule of law” as if it were a magic wand.

But the legal profession itself is no different from shallow sentimentalists and idealists. In fact, many within the legal field may be aligned with evil—or even thrive off it. Similar tendencies appear in other professional groups, such as medicine.

So perhaps the deeper problem is not the extreme minority of evil itself, but rather the shallow sentimentalists and idealists who disguise themselves as quiet “good,” pretending to be noble and dignified.

사족: 예전에도 비슷한 논제의 글을 수없이(?) 많이(?) 썼다. 지금 '선'에게 필요한 것은... 어설픈 '방패'가 아니다. 극렬한 소수의 '악'을 통제/제어/제거할 수 있는 확실한 무기가 필요하다. 방패같은 '나이브'한 도구로 극렬한 소수의 '악'을 제거는 커녕 동제 및 제어도 어렵다. 아니 못한다.

- 소수의 극렬한 '악'이 조용한 '선'을 몰아내는 현실

극렬한 소수의 '악'이 교육계에만 존재하는 것은 아니다. 소수의 극렬한 '악'은 세상 모든 곳에 극력한 소수의 악은 존재한다.

문제는 그러한 소수의 '악'이... 결국에는 '선'은 '악'을 이길 수 없게 하고, 소수의 극렬한 '악'이 다수의 조용한 '선'을 구축/몰아낸다는 것이다.

가장 큰 이유 중 하나는... (여러 번 비슷한 글을 썼었지만) 어설픈 감상주의와 이상주의들 때문이지 싶다.(물론 기타 다른 이유, 원인이 있겠지만 말이다.)

어설픈 감상주의와 이상주의자들은 어떤 완벽함 제조/시스템/장치 등을 요구한다. 즉, 현실에서 완벽함은 존재할 수 없음에도 불구하고... 그들은 '악'을 처벌/제어/통제하는 것에도 '완벽하고 정의로운 방법 혹은 수단을 요구하는 것이다.

비현실적 완벽함을 요구하는 어설픈 감상주의와 이상주의자들은 그것이 고상하고 품격 있는 것이고, 그러한 비현실적 완벽함을 주장/요구를 하는 자신은 다른 누구보다 고상하고, 품격 있으며 지적이라고 스스로 자부함으로써 자신이 좀 더 우월한 인간이라고 믿는다.

'선'이 '악'을 제거/통제/제어/무찌르기 위해서는 필연적으로 '선'은 '악'의 속성을 가져야 한다. 그래야 선이 악을 제어/통제/처벌할 수 있다.

'선'에게 '악'의 속성을 허용하지 않음으로 인해서(어설픈 이상주의자와 감상주의자들에 의해서)... 가해자가 피해자를 고소하고, 악이 선을 처벌하도록 허용하는 길을 열어주고 있는 것이 현실이다. 그러니 범죄자/가해자를 처벌/통제/제어하는 것이 비인간적 혹은 인간 존엄성과 비인권적이라는 주장이 나오게 되는 것이다. 그들은 피해자의 존엄성과 인권이 가해자/범죄자의 존엄성과 인권 보다 열등하다고 여긴다. 한마디로 어설픈 이데올로기에 빠진 어리석고 우매한 족속들이라 하겠다.

그 대표적인 무리가 바로 '법조계'가 아닐까 싶다. 법조계는 - 즉 법조계의 사람들 - 일상의 필부들이 보유한 가치와 상식을 열등하다고 여기며 조롱한다. 너희들은 법을 모르는 우매한 족속들로 법의 가르침과 통제를 받아야 한다고 여긴다. 그런까닭에 툭하면 소위 전문가를 자처하는 작자들이 법치주의를 들먹이며 마치 법치가 요술방망이라도 되는 듯이 언급하고 주장하는 것이다.

그러나 법조계 및 법조계 사람들 역시 어설픈 감상주의자와 어설픈 이상주의자들과 한통속이라 봐도 무관할 듯 싶다. (아니 어쩌면 법조계에 존재하는 다수는 악과 한 통속이거나, '악'을 근거로 먹고사는 집단일 가능성이 높다.) 이러한 특성은 소위 전문성을 가진 집단(ex: 의료계 등)에서 유난히(?) 뚜렷이 나타나기도 한다.

그렇게 따져보면... 더 큰 문제의 근본 원인은 극렬한 소수의 '악'이 아니라... 어쩌면 조용한 '선'처럼 위장하고 있는 고상하고 품격있는 척하는 어설픈 감상주의자 혹은 어설픈 이상주의자들이 아닐까 싶기도 하다.
