There’s a well-known quote: “Language, especially speaking, is not about studying or analyzing. It’s about acquisition, absorption, and immersion.”
Although we’re all familiar with that idea, it’s incredibly difficult to truly acquire, absorb, and immerse ourselves in English.
One major reason is that many of us simply don’t have the opportunity to use English in our daily lives. In fact, we don’t need to use it—our own language and writing system are more than sufficient, and are even regarded as among the most sophisticated in the field of linguistics.
Everyone has their own responsibilities and priorities, so it’s hard to focus solely on English. As a result, we often study it just to get good test scores.
This is getting a bit long, so to put it simply: becoming like a native speaker is extremely difficult. Honestly, I think it’s nearly impossible to speak like a native unless you were born and raised in an English-speaking country.
Some people say learning English is a lifelong journey. I agree. But after decades of studying, I’m honestly getting tired of that journey. Even though I’m still at it, I have to admit-I’m worn out from studying English.
