It’s hard to understand authentic native speech, especially because most of us aren’t native speakers born and raised in English-speaking countries.
To learn English effectively, we need to study, memorize, and acquire a large amount of vocabulary in order to understand written, spoken, and conversational English.
The best way to build vocabulary, so to speak, is by reading books or any kind of written materials. Our brains begin to absorb new words naturally when we encounter them in context. Of course, writing is also a great way to learn new vocabulary. It helps reinforce and consolidate the words you've learned.
I’m not a polyglot, but I’ve been studying English for many years. These days, I have plenty of free time, so I can spontaneously choose contemporary reading or listening materials online. I do not usually enjoy reading textbooks or scripted contents.
When I first started learning English a long time ago, there was no internet. Back then, it was very difficult to listen to, read, or speak English. It was a tough era for learning foreign languages.
Anyway, by consistently practicing reading, listening, writing, and speaking, you can gradually move from a lower level of English to a more advanced one. But it takes time - possibly even a lifetime - to truly master it.
