집단 자의식 - 인간의 본능 혹은 본성...

'집단 자의식'은 구성원들이 특정 집단에 소속되어 있다는 사실을 인지하고, 집단 외부의 시선을 의식하며 그 집단의 규칙이나 평판을 중요시하는 심리 상태입니다. 개인의 내적 가치보다 집단의 목표, 조화, 사회적 평가를 우선시하며, 집단 내 갈등을 피하고 일체감을 유지하려는 성향을 보입니다.

'집단 자의식'이 단지 검찰 조직에서만 나타나는 것은 아니다. '집단 자의식'은 누구에게서나, 어느 집단/조직에서나 나타날 수 있다. 특히 그 사람, 그 조직/집단이 특수성(?) 혹은 전문성(?) 등을 갖는다면 더 그렇다.

소위 말하는 전문직, 대기업 임직원 등이 대표적이지만... 작게는 동호회, 동문회, 동창회 등에서도 나타난다. 지팡이가 스스로를 모세라고 여기는 것은 사실 인간의 본능(?) 중 하나가 아닐까 싶기도 하다. 그래서 그 집단과 조직의 특수함과 특별함 혹은 전문성을 빙자한 권력(?)을 갖기 위해서 다들 박 터지게 공부하고, 노력해서 그 조직에 일원이 되려고 하는 것 아닌가...?

문제는 그것을 어떻게 적절한 수준으로 통제하느냐인데... 그게 쉽지 않다. 인간의 본능을 통제하기는 어렵기 때문이다. 물론 불가능한 것은 아니지만 말이다. 인간은 교육이나 훈련을 통해 어느정도 통제, 제어가 가능하지만... 쉬운 일은 아니다.

그런 까닭에 타인을 위해, 혹은 다수를 위해... 자신을 희생하거나 겸손한 사람들을 다수의 (그렇지못한) 사람들이 각별히 더 공경하고 존경하는 이유이기도 하다.

Collective Self-Consciousness – Human Instinct or Nature

“Collective self-consciousness” refers to the psychological state in which members of a group are aware of belonging to that group, conscious of how outsiders perceive it, and place importance on the group’s rules or reputation. It prioritizes the group’s goals, harmony, and social evaluation over individual inner values, showing a tendency to avoid conflict within the group and maintain unity.

This phenomenon is not limited to organizations like the prosecution. “Collective self-consciousness” can appear in anyone, in any group or organization. It is especially pronounced when the person or the group/organization possesses some kind of distinctiveness or expertise.

Professions considered “specialized,” executives of large corporations, and similar roles are typical examples. But it also manifests in smaller circles such as clubs, alumni associations, or school reunions. The idea of a staff imagining itself as Moses may well be one of humanity’s instincts. That’s why people study hard and strive fiercely to become part of such organizations—because they want to wield the power that comes with the group’s uniqueness, specialness, or expertise.

The real issue is how to control this at an appropriate level… which is not easy. Controlling human instincts is difficult. Not impossible, but certainly challenging. Through education and training, humans can achieve some degree of control and regulation—but it is never simple.

For that reason, people who sacrifice themselves or remain humble for the sake of others or the majority are especially respected and honored by those who do not share such qualities.
