▶영어를 배움에 있어... 사실 '글자/문자'로 숙어, 단어 등을 백날 숙지하고 외워봐야... 실제로 실생활에서 사용하지 않으면 솔직히 큰 소용은 없다. 왜냐하면 실제 사용하지 않으면 곧 잊어버리기 때문이다.
그래서 읽기와 쓰기, 말하기, 듣기를 모두 동시에 학습해야 한다. 그것도 하루도 빠짐없이 말이다. 딱히 사용할 필요가 없는데 매일 학습해야 하다니... 아... 그 얼마나 (에너지, 정력, 시간, 돈의) 소모/허비인가...? 실용성, 목적성이 없는 학습은 얼마나 지루한 일인인가. 쩝.
한데, 달리 도리가 없다. 이유야 어찌됐건, 영어가 가진 막강한 파급력, 보편성, 정보성을 무시할 수가 없기 때문이다. 과학이 서양에서 탄생하였고, 그 중심에 영어가 있다보니 정보의 량과 질의 측면에서 당해낼 방법이 없다.
▶ To find your feet: To become comfortable and confident in a new situation. 점차 적응해 나가다. ex) It took me a few weeks to find my feet at the new job.
▶ Get the hang of it: To learn how to do something through practice. 점차 요령을 터득하다. ex) The magic trick was stricky at first, but you'll get the hang of it after a few repetitions.
▶ Learn the ropes: To learn the basic skills of system. 기본을 배우다. ex) Are you new here? Let me show you how things are done around here, so you can learn the ropes
▶ ducks waddle 아장아장 걷다, snakes slither, 주루르 미끄러지다 insects crawl 기다/기어가다, frogs hop, wiggle 꼼지락거리다
▶ Take your breath away: Something is so beautiful or impressive that you momentarily can't react. 놀라다. ex) The view on the top of the mountain took my breath away.
▶ Go weak at the knees: To feel overwhelmed by emotion. Used especially in romantic contexts. 감정(공포, 흥분, 사랑 등) 때문에 몸이 흔들리거나 힘이 빠지는 상태. 다리가 풀리다. ex) She went weak at the knees when she first locked eyes with him.
* locked eyes with: 눈을 마주하다/눈을 마주치다.
▶ Get butterflies: To feel nervous, especially before something important. 긴장하다/긴장되다. ex) I always get butterflies before a presentation.
▶ Play ball!: To begin or cooperate. 시작하다. ex) If they are ready to play ball, we can close the deal today.
▶ Throw a curveball: To surprise someone with something unexpected. 예기치 못한 행동을 하다. ex) The question really threw me a curveball. I didn't expect he would ask me about advanced algebra.
▶ Play hardball: To use agression or be firm in one's way to achieve a goal. 협상, 경쟁에서 상대를 쉽게 양보시키지 않고, 단호하고 공격적으로 밀어붙이는 태도. ex) He was a man's man. He was playing hardball when he negotiated that deal.
