What is an ETF? / ETF

  1. ETF(상장 지수 펀드)의 정의:

What is an ETF?

Not long ago, when I bought a label invoice barcode printer, I felt the same way I do now: in today’s modern society, whenever you buy something or use a service, there just seems to be too much you need to know. Honestly, it’s exhausting. People born with a “golden spoon” in their mouth probably don’t have to deal with this kind of fatigue…

Anyway, after briefly studying ETFs, here’s my personal takeaway: If you’ve got a small amount of spare money and want to earn returns at the level of cigarette money or side-dish money—without too much stress or worry—then ETFs make sense. Otherwise, I wouldn’t recommend them. Because if you’re going to worry about risk anyway (since risk is never zero), you might as well choose something that’s more complicated but offers higher returns.

So here’s what I’ve learned:

  1. Definition of ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund):

    • An ETF is a “fund traded on an exchange.” It’s a basket of assets listed on the stock market so you can buy and sell it like a stock. Most ETFs are designed to track the movement of a specific index or asset.

  2. Difference from stocks and regular funds:

    • Stocks: You directly buy shares of a single company.

    • Regular funds: Money from many investors is pooled and managed by professionals (fund managers). They aren’t traded in real time like stocks; instead, transactions are based on a daily calculated price.

    • ETFs: Listed on the stock market, they trade in real time like stocks. They combine the diversification of a fund with the convenience of stock trading.

  3. Advantages and cautions of ETFs:

    • Advantages: Easy diversification with small amounts of money. For example, buying an ETF that tracks the S&P 500 gives you exposure to major U.S. companies. You can invest not only in domestic and international stocks but also in bonds, gold, oil, semiconductors, and more. Many ETFs have lower management fees than regular funds.

    • Cautions: Unlike deposits, your principal isn’t guaranteed. Depending on performance, you can make gains or suffer losses.

  4. How to read ETF names and what to check before investing:

    • Even if two ETFs track the same index, their names may differ. The first word is usually the asset manager’s brand name. Different managers mean differences in fees, trading volume, and dividend policies.

    • So when choosing an ETF, always check:

      • What assets are included

      • Which index or strategy it follows

      • The costs and fees

      • The trading volume
