Beautiful Memories Formed in Childhood
“Remember this: there is nothing more precious, powerful, and beneficial for a child’s future than good memories—especially the beautiful memories of family in childhood.
People say many things about education. But no education can compare to the sacred and beautiful memories kept from childhood.
Anyone who carries even one beautiful memory in their heart will not fall into evil. And if a person lives with many such memories, they will remain safe until the very end of their life.”
—From Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov
Looking back, I realize I don’t have many (or perhaps any) beautiful childhood family memories. Partly it’s because I don’t tend to remember the past well, but also because my parents’ own childhood and youth were lived in times and circumstances that didn’t allow for such memories to be created. Still, I never resented them for it—back then, most people lived hard lives just trying to get by.
Even so, I’m grateful that I didn’t fall into evil, or become a delinquent or a thug. I may not have grown into someone especially thoughtful, refined, dignified, or intellectual, but at least I’ve lived a fairly ordinary life. I’m thankful that I’ve gotten through life without major pain, suffering, or hardship. I have nothing much to boast of—no wealth, no impressive background, no power—but whether I had something or not, whether I was happy or sad, I managed to enjoy or endure each moment as it came. And for that, I feel fortunate.
Perhaps, deep down, there are beautiful family memories within me that I simply cannot recall—memories lying dormant in the depths of my heart.
