President Lee Jae-myung: Creditors also bear responsibility if they lend excessively…?
On September 11, President Lee Jae-myung said: “Failing to repay debt is basically the debtor’s fault, but the general view nowadays is that creditors also bear responsibility if they lend excessively without considering repayment ability.”
But isn’t that a bit strange? It’s not as if creditors are forcing, threatening, or coercing people to borrow. In many cases, debtors plead and beg until the creditor finally agrees to lend. To then say the lender is also at fault feels like an overreach.
There’s a saying that conservatives collapse due to corruption and selfishness, while progressives collapse due to incompetence and division. Whoever coined that phrase did a good job—it rings true.
President Lee also remarked: “It’s impossible for someone to deliberately avoid repayment for years, enduring the inability to get a job, open a bank account, or engage in economic activity.”
That may sound idealistic or sentimental, but it shows a lack of awareness of malicious debtors. Some deliberately avoid employment, set up businesses under family members’ names, transfer ownership of property and assets to others, and even use credit cards issued under someone else’s name—living comfortably without any inconvenience.
If a debtor who cannot (or will not) repay at least showed some remorse, there might be room for understanding. But when they act shamelessly, without guilt or apology, and even with a sense of pride, it exposes flaws in the system. Sentimental or idealistic approaches only end up creating new victims.
