Caring for my mother taught me that even sisters can become strangers.

Watching that video, one line stood out to me most clearly: “I thought it would be fine if I just did a little more.”

I felt the same way at first. I thought, naïvely, that it wasn’t such a big deal—if I just did a little more, it would be fine.

But when that “little more” became my daily reality, and that reality stretched into a month, then a year, then two years, with no end in sight, things began to change.

As I grew older, my strength declined. Tasks that once felt trivial—things I thought I could “just do a bit more of”—started to weigh heavily. Year by year, I felt the limits of my body more acutely.

And when you reach the age where you must earn a living and support others, you realize that even siblings cannot always share the burden.

It isn’t easy to reproach a rational, perhaps cold, older sister. After all, she simply made her choices according to her own temperament, personality, values, and worldview—just as I made mine. Even siblings differ in these things.

That said, in the case from the video, if the sister had promised to cover the nursing home costs, she should have kept that promise. To make such a promise and then abandon it, shifting the burden onto her sibling, suggests not just rationality or coldness but perhaps a deeper flaw in character.

Still, I cannot claim to be superior or more moral simply because I cared for my parent more. I acted according to my own nature, values, and beliefs—just as my sister acted according to hers.

So I cannot endlessly blame or condemn her for being different. If I did, she could just as rightly condemn me.

At first, I felt hurt. But after a day or two of reflection, I began to understand those who keep their distance. Even siblings—or parents and children—must ultimately live their own lives, guided by their own temperament, values, and worldview. Sharing the burden may lighten it, but it also prolongs the time you must carry it. And whatever choice one makes, guilt inevitably follows—and guilt is not easily erased.

In the end, the suffering and anguish that arise from birth, aging, sickness, and death are the inevitable burdens of being human. Unless one becomes a Buddha or a god, liberation from these pains is nearly impossible.

So do not resent your sister too much, but do not forgive her too easily either. Judge and choose according to your own heart, your own nature, your own values and worldview.

Of course, all these thoughts are just words. And words can say anything. In reality, when faced with frail, aging parents, each person must decide moment by moment what actions to take. In that video, the younger sibling made her choice, and the older sibling made hers.

Ultimately, every human being is alone. No one can bear another’s suffering—or joy—in their place. Not even siblings, not even parents and children. (In my personal view, children should not be bound by obligations to their parents. Their responsibility lies only with their own children.)

And it is always those who love more, who are kinder, who are more selfless, who end up suffering more.
