Principle vs. Flexibility…
At first glance, it may seem like a simple issue, but in reality it’s a very complex and difficult question.
Take, for example, a fire truck speeding to put out a blaze, only to be caught by a speed camera. [Seoul Newspaper article link]
My personal view is that principles should come first. Yet if we cling only to rules and principles, it becomes nearly impossible to attempt something new, to try what others haven’t, to invent, or to create. In fact, if you insist solely on principles, genuine innovation is virtually impossible.
A representative example of the tension between principle and flexibility might be the military service exemptions granted to those who have “brought honor to the nation.” Whether it is athletes, artists, scientists, or writers who achieve global recognition, the question of whether it is principled to grant them exemption is a very thorny one. (The debate over mandatory service being imposed only on men is much the same.)
In Korea today, anyone who tries to uphold principles meticulously is often branded as inflexible, old‑fashioned, foolish, or narrow‑minded.
The case in the photo is ultimately just another example judged by results. If the drug “Kevadon” had turned out to have no side effects, how would Dr. Kelsey have been evaluated? Life tends to be judged in hindsight, with outcomes retroactively accepted as the “right” answer.
