Where are those intelligent Chinese

at Tiananmen Square Protest of 1989?

One of Korean university students wrote about current chaotic Hong Kong situation. It is quite impressive message. So I quote it here on my blog with a hope of many Chinese reading it too, especially Chinese international students studying in Korea, who destroyed some Korean students' written paper posted on their campuses.

I have tried to translate it as much as I can with my broken English. But my English is not good. So, I tried to summarize it simple. The red colored texts are my English translation of original Korean message.

Constantinopolis 1453, Gwangju 1980, and Hong Kong 2019

인간은 현명하다. 그래서 가망이 있는 싸움인지 아닌지를 쉽게 안다.

인간은 어리석다. 그래서 가망이 없는 싸움임을 알면서도 죽으러 나간다.

인간은 고결하다. 그래서 가망이 없는 싸움에서 결국 승리한다.

Human is wise. Therefore they know whether it is a possible fight or not.

Human is stupid. Therefore they are willing to die even if they know it is a hopeless fight.

Human is noble. Therefore they finally win on that hopeless battle.

1453년, 콘스탄티노폴리스. 한때 지중해를 빙 둘러쌌던 보편제국 로마의 마지막 조각, 그리스 끝자락의 ‘그리스도를 믿는 콘스탄티누스의 도시’는 이제 십만 명이 넘는 투르크의 포위군과 거대한 대포에 둘러싸였다. 이에 맞선 방어군은 7000명 미만. 교황청과 베네치아가 보내 준 극소수의 병력과 한 줌의 의용군을 제외하면, 서유럽의 수많은 나라 중 단 하나도 도시를 구하러 오지 않았다. 살고 싶으면 무기를 버리고 항복해야 했다. 50여일의 처절한 공방전 후 다가온 투르크군의 총공격 전날 밤, 그리스 혈통의 마지막 로마인들은 살기 위해 성문을 열고 메카를 향해 절하는 대신 하기아 소피아의 그리스도 모자이크 아래에서 밤새 기도했다. 이길 수 없는 싸움이었음을 그들도 모두 알고 있었다. 다음 날 도시는 함락되었고 시민들은 자신들의 자유와 동방 정교회 신앙을 위해 가망 없는 싸움에서 싸우다 죽었다. 그렇게 이천년의 로마가 끝났다.

Constantinopolis, 1453 was surrounded by 100,000 Turk(Türk 諸族, Türk halklar) and cannons. They had only 7000 defenders. Nobody, any single man, from West Europe came to help them. They knew they will never win. They had to give up if they want to live. But they were lost as expected after 50 days battles. They choose to die for their liberty and freedom of religion.

1980년, 광주. 도시는 계엄군의 탱크와 장갑차에 둘러싸였다. 학생들과 평범한 아저씨 아줌마들로 구성되었던 시민군의 무장은 경찰서 무기고에서 얻은 소총 수준. 도시의 모든 통신시설은 차단되었고, 당시 평시작전권까지 가지고 있던 주한미군은 계엄군의 병력이동을 알면서도 저지하지 않았다. 그 어떤 서방 선진국들도 적극적으로 개도국 한국의 한 지방도시에 대한 군사작전에 개입하지 않았고, 도시 밖에는 빨갱이들과 북괴의 특수부대가 도시를 점령했다는 거짓 뉴스가 살포된다. 이런 상황에서 계엄군과 맞서면 죽을 것이란 것은 시민군 모두가 알고 있었다. 특히 군필자들은 더 확실히 다가오는 죽음을 알 수 있었을 것이다. 탱크의 궤도 소리가 들려오던 전남도청의 마지막 밤, 시민군들은 도망치는 대신 애국가를 불렀다. 민간인들이 공수부대를 당해낼 수 있을 턱이 없었으므로, 광주시민들은 자유와 민주주의를 위해 가망 없는 싸움에서 공화국 대한민국의 주권자로서 저항권을 행사하다 죽었다. 그렇게 1980년 서울의 봄은 광주의 피바다로 끝이 났다.

GwangJu city in 1980. The city was surrounded by martial law army, tanks and armored vehicles. The students and middle-aged men and women couldn't do anything even if they knew they were surrounded by tanks and army. The fake news were saying that the city is occupied by riots and communist special forces. Nobody, any single country, from west countries came to help them. And they knew they were going to die if they kept protesting. Especially those students who finished their military service. It is obvious that the civilians cannot beat the airborne troops. The night of final protesting, people were singing Korean national anthem instead of running away. As a sovereign of Korea, they chose to die with exerting their right of resistance on that hopeless fight or protest. That is how it is ended. Spring in 1980, protesting Gwangju ended with a pool of blood.

2019년, 홍콩. 손바닥만한 도시는 인민해방군 특수부대에게 둘러싸였다. 콘스탄티노폴리스와 광주와는 달리, 이번에는 도시 밖의 사람들도 스마트폰으로 도시의 소식을 듣는다. 한 남자 대학생이 건물에서 떨어져 죽었으며 열여섯 살 소녀가 경찰들에게 강간당했고 한 여자 중학생은 바다에서 알몸 시신으로 발견되었다는 뉴스가 ‘2019년’에 들려온다. 시위대는 진압군에게 양궁으로 화살을 쏘고, 진압군은 시위대에게 총으로 실탄을 쏜다. 10대와 20대가 주축을 이루는 시위대는 이제 각 대학의 캠퍼스에 갇혔고, 마오쩌둥 꿈나무 시진핑은 전 세계에 강경진압도 불사하겠다고 큰소리를 친다. 영중공동선언과 조약법에 관한 비엔나 협정으로 보장되는 “주권은 중화인민공화국이, 치권은 홍콩특별행정구가 각각 행사한다”는 일국양제의 약속은 시진핑의 말 한마디에 휴지조각이 되었다. 보아하니 지난 학기 국제법 교과서에 쓰인 문장은 실로 참되다. “국제법은 법이 아니다.”

2019 Hong Kong. That small city is surrounded by the People's Liberation Army of China. Unlike Constantinopolis and Gwangju, the outside of the world knows about Hong Kong situation via smartphone and internet. The rest of the world heard that news saying that Hong Kong university student was killed in a fall from building, 15 years old girl was raped by Hong Kong police and killed, a naked teenager middle school girl was found on the sea. Yes, we are hearing that kind of news in year 2019. The protesters shoot arrows to the helmeted police and suppress soldiers, and the suppress forces are shooting bullets to the protesters. The protesters consisted with mostly teenagers and twenty years old young people are confined in their college campus. The Xi jinping who seems like growing up with Mao Zedong's philosophy is openly saying that he is going to cracking down on those protesters to the world. His promise guaranteed by Sino-British Joint Declaration and Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, one country with two systems which is sovereignty by the People's Republic of China and administration by Hong Kong Special Administrative Region now becomes worthless and useless overnight with Xi jinping's single word. That reminds me a sentence saw on the textbook of international law last semester: "International law is not a law." Now I know it is quite true.

이처럼 베이징의 결단은 명징하다. 홍콩에서 밀린다면, 타이완에서, 티베트에서, 신장위구르에서, 광시좡족 자치구에서 똑같이 밀릴 것이고 그 순간 중화인민공화국은 걷잡을 수 없는 혼란에 빠져들 것이다. 시진핑에게는 1989년 천안문을 소규모로 재현하는 한이 있더라도, 국제사회의 전방위적 제재를 받는 한이 있더라도 홍콩 시위를 진압해야 할 이유가 있는 것이다. 물론 그는 탱크를 구룡반도로 돌진시킬 정도로 멍청한 자가 아니므로, 유혈사태를 최대한 줄이는 방향으로 시위를 분쇄하려 하겠지만.

The China's decision is very clear. If they step back in Hong Kong, they will be same in Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang Uygur, Guǎngxī Zhuàngzú Zìzhìqū/Gvangjsih Bouxcuengh Swcigi. In that case, China will fall into chaos. Maybe Xi jinping has to suppress Hong Kong protest nevertheless international sanctions. In Tiananmen Square Protest 1989, Xi jinping did similar things as he do in Hong Kong. As he is not stupid, he will try to minimize bloody situation.

중국 본토를 제외한 전 세계가 홍콩을 안타까운 눈으로 바라보지만, 나설 수 있는 그 누구도 감히 나서지 않는다. 워싱턴의 천자는 민주당의 탄핵 카드와 우크라이나 스캔들로 빨간불이 켜진 재선 상황에서 중국과 국력을 기울여야 할 정도의 극단적인 갈등을 빚을 여력이 없다. 중영공동선언에 의해 홍콩의 민주주의가 위협받을 때 개입할 의무가 있는 영국 총리는 브렉시트 문제에 발목이 잡혀 있다. 외무장관 시절 보여주던 보리스의 현란한 막말실력은 감히 베이징을 향하지 않는다. 유럽과 이혼중인 이빨 빠진 사자 대영제국은 이제 자신의 손을 떠난 도시 하나 때문에 굴기하는 중국과 맞설 의지도 힘도 없다. 모스크바의 차르는 그의 신민들이 홍콩을 따라하기를 원하지 않는다. 그가 홍콩을 위해 힘을 써 줄 이유 같은 건 없다. 예배당과 성당에 경찰이 난입하여 시위대를 끌어내는 상황 속에서, 즉위 이래 평화를 위해 싸워온 로마의 프란치스코도 이번에는 중국을 소리높여 강하게 비난하지 못한다. 수십 년의 갈등 끝에 중국과 바티칸의 주교서임권 정교협약 물밑협상이 막바지에 다다라 있는 상황에서, 그 어떤 전임자들보다 미디어와 도덕성이라는 소프트파워를 잘 다뤄온 교황이 적극적으로 홍콩 편을 든다면, 안 그래도 그리스도교를 체제의 위험분자로 인식해 탄압하는 중국 정부에 의해 본토의 수천만 가톨릭과 개신교 신자들은 지금보다 더한 극도의 박해에 직면할 테니까 말이다.

The world is watching what is happening in Hong Kong. But nobody is willing to help them. Because... Washington is buy due to the impeachment issue, Ukraine scandal, reelection and so on. What about British? They have an obligation if Hong Kong's democracy is in danger. The British prime minister is also busy to take care of his domestic problems-Brexit. British has no will or powder against China. Russia? Russia does not have any reason to help Hong Kong. Also Russia does not want Russia people following Hong Kong's protesting. The Francis in the Roman also do not criticize China because there seems like a kind of negotiation with China government for Vatican's bishop appointment agreement. If Vatican criticize China for Hong Kong protesters, many catholic church members in China will be encounter with a sever oppression.

1980년 광주를 두 눈으로 지켜본 ‘인권변호사’ 출신 대한민국의 대통령도 마찬가지다. 2016년 사드배치로 인한 경제보복의 기억이 생생한 상황에서, 한국에게 경제적으로나 정치적으로나 별로 중요하지도 않은 도시 홍콩의 자유와 민주주의를 위해 거대한 중국과 맞서는 것은 정치적으로나 외교적으로나 자살행위일 테니까. 그를 지지하든 지지하지 않든, 홍콩에 대한 그의 침묵을 도덕적 이유가 아니라 현실정치적 이유로 욕하기는 어렵다. 여당도 제 1 야당도 제 2 야당도 이 지점에 있어서는 꿀 먹은 벙어리일 수밖에.

it is same South Korea president MoonJae In who well knows about Gwangju because he was watching 1980 Gwangju. In 2016, Korea had encountered a terrible economic sanctions from China because of THAAD deployment. So South Korea is also hard to express or support for Hong Kong's current situation politically and diplomatically against China's enforcement brutality. Only best way is not to say anything about Hong Kong struggling.

이렇게 전 세계가 보고 있지만, 홍콩의 시위대를 위해 중국과 맞서 줄 세력은 없다. 시진핑은 시위대를 탱크로 밀어버리지는 못하겠지만 이미 눈 하나 깜짝 안 하고 실탄사격 개시 명령을 내려놓았다. 그렇기에, 너무나도 슬프고 두렵고 안타깝지만 시위대는 아마 이 싸움에서 이기기 힘들 것이다. 며칠 안으로 홍콩 각 대학의 마지막 저항은 진압되고, 추가적인 사망자가 나올 것이며, 중국은 언제나 그랬듯이 적당히 유화적인 조치와 시위대 사면이라는 당근을 통해 세계에 변명하리라. 아마 홍콩에서 지금 시위하는 10대 소녀 소년들과 20대 남녀 대학생들도 아마 알고 있을 것이다. 거대한 괴물 중화인민공화국을, 자신들이 ‘지금’이길 수는 없을 것이라고. 그리고 민주주의를 공기처럼 누리는 우리도 그들만큼 잘 알고 있다. 홍콩의 우리 또래, 우리 동생 또래들이 왜 가망이 없는 싸움임을 알면서도 목숨을 걸고 거리로 나서고 캠퍼스에서 농성하는지를.

Even the world is watch Hong Kong, under above international circumstances, no power can help Hong Kong currently. Xi jinping couldn't use tanks to get rid of Hong Kong protesters, but already commended to shot the gun to the protesters without any hesitation. even if it is very sad and regrettable, Hong Kong protesters will be hard to win on the fight with China. Within a few days, Hong Kong colleges will be suppressed and controlled, and would be another death individuals. Probably Hong Kong students knows already that they cannot defeat the monster, China. But we, who enjoying democracy, know why Hong Kong young people are protesting for hopeless fight at risk to their life on the street and on the campus.

그렇다면, 홍콩의 시위는 ‘질 수 밖에 없는 싸움’일까? ‘고결한 희생’ 일 뿐일까? 결국 홍콩의 민주주의는 인민해방군의 군화발에 무너질까?

Then, is Hong Kong's protesting really hopeless fight? It is just noble sacrifice? Hong Kong's protesting is going to be destroyed by the People's Liberation Army of China?

콘스탄티노폴리스는 이스탄불로 바뀌어, 영원히 터키의 수중에 남았다. 하지만 함락으로부터 400년 가까운 시간이 지난 후에도, 콘스탄티노폴리스를 기억하는 그리스의 동방 정교회 신도들은 ‘자유가 아닌 죽음을!’을 외치며 가슴에 도시의 회복을 품고 독립운동을 벌여 투르크와 싸웠다. 이번에는 바이런을 필두로 유럽의 열강들이 달려왔고, 그리스인들은 콘스탄티노폴리스는 되찾지 못했으나 자유는 되찾았다. 아직도 그리스에서는 이스탄불을 콘스탄티노폴리라고 부르며, 동방 정교회의 세계총대주교는 콘스탄티노폴리스 총대주교라고 불린다. 콘스탄티노폴리스는, 그렇게 이름 그대로 그리스인들에게 영원히 그리스도교를 공인한 콘스탄티누스의 도시, 그들의 마음 속 도시로 남았다.

Constantinopoli is became to Istanbul, and belong to Turkey. But 400 years later, Greek Orthodox Church members are still shouting "Give me liberty, or give me death." in the memory of Constantinopoli, and fought for independence movement with Turk. At that time, Europe powers such as Byron came to help so that Greek got freedom even if they did not get back Constantinopoli. Still in Greece, some people call Istanbul as Constantinopoli. The Constantinopoli is remained all Greek people like that.

광주 민주화 운동은 학살극으로 막을 내렸다. 하지만 그 누구도 1980년을 잊지 않았다. 그 후 7년 동안, 수많은 대학생들은 독재정권과 지속적으로 가망 없어 보이는 싸움을 했다. 대공분실에서 코로 설렁탕을 마셔야 했고, 최루탄 연기를 마셔야 했으며, 고문으로 장애를 얻었다. 그리고 그 결과는 우리 모두가 알고 있다. 1980년 광주에서의 싸움은 전남도청의 피바다로 끝난 것이 아니라 1987년 백양로의 이한열의 피로 끝났다. 그 피로써 공화국은 다시 민주주의와 자유를 얻었다. 어둠이 빛을 이길 수는 없었던 것이다. 그렇게 광주는 빛고을이라는 이름 그대로, 우리에게 자유의 빛을 다시 밝혀 주었다.

Gwangju is finished. But no Korean forget about Gwangju. After 7 years later, again students constantly fought the hopeless fight against dictatoship. Many students/people became disabled because of torture. But we know... that Gwangju was not failed. Gwangju was not finished in 1980, it was finished in 1987 when Lee Han-Yuel student was dead by tear gas shooting on his head. Through his death and his blood, our country, republic, got democracy and freedom. Darkness cannot overshadow light. The meaning of Gwangju is a "lighting village". As its city name is lighting village, Gwangju gave us the light of freedom.

나는 하느님을 믿는 만큼이나 기적을 믿는다. 그래서 홍콩 시위대가 승리하기를, 더 이상 홍콩의 누구도 피를 흘리지 않기를, 중화인민공화국이 무력진압 대신 타협과 협상을 선택하기를, 그런 기적이 일어나기를 정말 간절히 바란다. 하지만 기적이 일어나지 않는다 할지라도, 2019년의 홍콩 시위가 진압당한다고 할지라도, 소녀들과 소년들, 남녀 대학생들이 인민해방군의 군화에 짓밟히고 체포된다고 할지라도, 그것이 끝은 아닐 것이다. 콘스탄티노폴리스가 그랬고 광주가 그랬듯이, 그것이 홍콩의 끝은 아닐 것이다.

I believe a miracle as much as I believe God. Therefore, I wish with all my heart that Hong Kong can win the hopeless fight, nobody get hurts, China does not use a negotiation and talks instead of cracking down to solve Hong Kong's requests. I really wish that kind of miracles happen. I know even though no miracle will be arisen, and even though Hong Kong suppressed in 2019, even though boys and girls and young students are arrested and trampled by the military boots of China, it is not the end of Hong Kong. As Constantinopoli did and Gwangju did, it will be not the end of Hong Kong.

만약 중국이 홍콩을 짓밟는다면, 온 세상이 ‘중화인민공화국’이 빛나는 중화문명의 계승자도, 인민을 위한 나라도, 공동선을 추구하는 공화국도 아닌 시황제의 진나라의 21세기 복제판에 지나지 않음을 알게 될 것이기 때문이고, 중국 대륙에서 중국 공산당에 의심을 품는 모두의 마음 속에 홍콩이 흘린 피와 눈물이 영원이 기억될 것이기 때문이다. 그리스인들이 콘스탄티노폴리스를 기억했고, 한국인들이 광주를 기억했듯. 그리고 그 기억이 결국 절망적인 싸움을 승리로 이끌었음을 우리는 보았다.

If China tramples over Hong Kong, the world will know that the People's Republic of China is not an inheritor of the greatest Chinese civilization(中國文明) and also not republic and pursuing to common virtues, but it is just 21 century version duplication of Qin Shihuangdi. Therefore, Hong Kong's tears and blood will be remembered eternally in some Chinese as well as human who has a doubt for China communism as Greek remembers Constantinopoli, and Koreans remembers Gwangju. Lastly that remember will bring a victory over that hopeless fight. We, as Korean, know it because we saw it via our recent modern history.

그렇게 2019년의 홍콩에서 벌어지는 이 절망적인 싸움을 통해, 온 세상은 ‘빛나는 중화 문명’의 계승자들이 바다를 등지고 자유와 민주를 위해 싸울 때 얼마나 고결한 향기를 뿜는지를 영원히 기억하게 될 것이다. 그리고 시진핑이 아니라 마오쩌둥이 살아돌아와도, 폭력과 살육의 악취로 그 향기를 가리지 못할 것이다. 그렇게, 홍콩 사람들도 결국 가망 없는 싸움에서 승리할 것이다.

Through that hopeless fight happening in Hong Kong in 2019, the world will know and remember how Hong Kong people has fight for freedom and democracy and how they are noble and virtuous. The fragrant of nobility and virtue cannot be covered by the trace of violence and slaughter committed in Hong Kong by Xi jinping or even Mao Zedong if he is revived again.

홍콩은 향항, 향기로운 항구라는 뜻이다.
